Biography

London-based vocalist started her vocal training at WAC Arts and Media College, under the tuition of Rachel Bennett (Raie), and Julie Dexter.  Deborah started to collaborate with some of London’s top session musicians on the jam circuit, such as Sam Beste, Dave Preston, Josh Morrison. Alongside this, she regularly attended the spoken word and open mic night, Urban Griots.

Then progressed onto completing a degree at Middlesex University – BA Honours in Jazz Performance in 2010.  Which then lead on to form her first quintet where she had a monthly residency at Charlie Wrights Jazz Bar in Hoxton, London.  The quintet comprised of Deborah on vocals, Ed Riches (guitarist – Bilal, Xante Blaq, Jose James, Yolanda Brown, Omar), Henry Gilbert (double bass – Shirt Tail Stompers, Jo Harrop), Chris Packham (drums) who is now based in New York, and Al Scott (keyboard/piano – Al Scott trio, Niah Porter).

Other musicians Deborah has worked with are Hannes Riepler (Andre Canniere Group, Esben Tjalve’s Red Kite, Ryan Trebilcock’s Holler),  Tom Herbert (The Invisible, Polar Bear, and Moats & Thrones),  Ben Bastin (Gilad Atzmon, Sarah Gillespie), Eddie Hick (Gilad Atzmon, Roots Manuva, Mark Ronson, Sons of Kemet) Christian Miller (Shirt Tail Stompers, Balagan Cafe Band, Shirley Smart Trio), and John Crawford (Airto Moreira, Julie Dexter, Tony Kofi, Bjork, Lewis Taylor) . Her Swing trio features Marcus Penrose on double bass, and Harry Diplock on guitar.
